Thomas Jefferson and James Madison didn't build a wall of separation between church and state because they were hostile to religion. They built it because they had just escaped a system where the government and the church were one, and they had read enough history to know where that ends.
The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom established that no person should be forced to support any religion with their taxes and that the opinions of men were not the business of civil government. Jefferson considered it one of his three greatest achievements, alongside the Declaration of Independence.
Religious liberty was among the first freedoms Americans demanded, and it remains a foundational American principle worth protecting in every generation.
