Secular Grounds

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison didn't build a wall of separation between church and state because they were hostile to religion. They built it because they had just escaped a system where the government and the church were one, and they had read enough history to know where that ends.

The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom established that no person should be forced to support any religion with their taxes and that the opinions of men were not the business of civil government. Jefferson considered it one of his three greatest achievements, alongside the Declaration of Independence.

The wall of separation is not a courtesy. It is a hard-won protection against the use of government power to enforce a particular community's theological preferences on everyone else. It is under serious pressure at this particular moment in American history.
